Small birds that can be found from 500 to almost 4000 m in open country and in the grassy areas of paramos. Three species and one is vagrant. Usually alone or in pairs. Cryptic brownish feathers with medium to long tails. Bills are long, slender and pointed. Tertial feathers on the wing entirely cover the primary flight feathers to protect the primaries which are essential to fly. The tertials then protect the primaries from the sun which cause the feathers to fade and become brittle if not protected. Consume small invertebrates. Insects the most important prey. Pipits are ground nesters, laying up to six speckled eggs.
